2023 BHAC Sharks Swim Team Information

Friday, April 21: Registration opens- Returning swim team members only

Wednesday, May 18: Registration is open for new swim team members that have completed a swim evaluation.

ALL NEW 10 and under swimmers (have not swam on BHAC Swim Team in previous seasons) must complete a swim evaluation prior to registering for the team.  This includes those who swam on pre-team last year. If a new swimmer registers prior to evaluation and does not make the team, refunds will not be issued until September.

NEW FAMILIES interested in their children trying out for swim team:

  • Kids will be required to complete an evaluation which will determine if they are placed/ready for swim team or pre-team.
  • Swim team requirements – any BHAC children 4-18 are eligible for swim team provided they can swim a full length of freestyle and backstroke (doesn’t have to be perfect or even pretty…that’s why you join the team!) comfortably without assistance.
  • If they are 9 and under, and not quite ready for swim team – we have a pre-team with a requirement of swimming the width of the dive well in freestyle and backstroke, comfortably without assistance and can tread water in the deep end.

If you should have any questions regarding BHAC swim team, please contact our Swim Team reps Laura and Kristen

Please note – refunds for registered swimmers will only be issued until June 1, 2023.

Coaching Staff

Head Coach:

Tom Warnica

I can’t believe I’m heading into my 14th summer as the BHAC head coach. I’ve been teaching 7th grade Math and coaching the swim teams at Derby Middle School for the close to 30 years. I’ve also been coaching in the NSSL for almost as long. I swam competitively for 12 years with teams at Heart of the Hills Swim Club, OLY, and Rochester Adams HS before moving on to my freshman year at Oakland University where I was an All-American. Outside of the pool I am a huge Detroit sports fan and enjoy watching football and hockey in the winter and Tigers baseball in the summer. A fun fact that most people don’t know about me is that during my first year swimming at HHSC, when I was 7 yrs old, I was disqualified in every meet swimming the 25 Butterfly – UNTIL the last meet which was at BHAC! I’m really excited about our upcoming season and can’t wait to spend the summer with the great swimmers and families at BHAC!

Assistant Coaches:

Steve Drinkert

Hi everyone.  This is coach Steve.  Here is some information about me – I recently completed my 23rd year of teaching for the Dearborn Public Schools.  I’ve also completed over 20 years of coaching swimming in the vicinity of Birmingham, plus coached for many summer swim seasons in the area.  If memory serves me correctly, this will be my seventh season coaching at BHAC.  This is a great group of swimmers, coaches, and parents to work with.  I look forward to meeting the new swimmers and parents.  To the returning swimmers and parents, I have been working on my puns since last summer.

To wrap up my bio, I wanted to share some words of wisdom that came from an ancient Greek philosopher named Mediacrates.  He said, “In the world of gallons, be a litre.”

Laura Jamieson

Once a shark, always a shark. I started coaching for BHAC in 2019, but my time as a shark started LONG before that! I was 4 years old (1995!) when I started swimming for BHAC for the pre-team. That was when they had “C’ Finals for the pre-teamers! We swam across the deep end with older swimmers cheering us on. I swam for the sharks for 13 summers (ages 5 to 18) and loved every minute of it. I made lifelong friends and still have a record! When it’s not summer and I’m not on the pool deck I am teaching Language Arts at Van Hoosen Middle School in Rochester. I enjoy going to workout at AKT, hanging out with friends and family, and cheering on the Detroit sports teams. As a kid, I always looked forward to spending everyday at BHAC. As an adult, I can say that it still makes me happy! I can’t wait to spend the summer with all the families at BHAC.

Claire LaSota

I am very excited to be back at BHAC this year! I grew up swimming in the NSSL and this is my eighth year coaching.  When I am not at BHAC, I also coach the woman’s Water Polo team at Groves High School and I teach World and US History at Canton High School.  Off the pool deck and out of the classroom, I enjoy gardening, spending time with friends and family and traveling.   I am looking forward to a fun-filled season with lots of fast swims!

Alysse Rentner

BHAC has always been my home away from home. Although it’s only my second year back with the Sharks, they are no strangers to me! I swam competitively at BHAC from age 8 to 18, coached alongside some of our current staff for 2 summers after graduating high school, and have so many amazing memories from my childhood on our great pool deck. Growing up, I swam for BBA then MCA and was a four-year varsity swimmer and senior captain for Birmingham Groves High School. I graduated from Oakland University in 2018, where I wrapped up my competitive swimming career. I was an OU and Horizon League Conference Record Holder, 9x Horizon League All Conference Honoree, and received the Oakland University Academic Athlete of the Year Award in my final season as a college athlete. I’ve been an elementary teacher in Birmingham Public Schools since the 2019-2020 school year and love making a positive impact on kids’ lives. I feel very lucky to be a part of this wonderful community of BHAC swimmers and families, and am looking forward to an exciting season ahead!

Carrie Drinkert

Handbook

We have updated and attached our 2023 BHAC Swim Team Handbook.  This is a great resource for new swim families that are trying to navigate the first year of swim team.  There are lot of events and meets that take place over an 8 week period of time, and this will help provide an overview of our team and what to expect at a typical swim meet and throughout the season.  On the last page, we have included a list of our meets with all the start/warmup/arrival times.  Please refer to this or team snap schedule to see when/where each meet will take place.
